By Ashley Fairbrother, Paralegal, Regulatory Corporate Crime team

Lyons Davidson’s head of Regulatory Corporate Crime, Richard Voke is speaking at the joint Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Avon Occupational Safety and Health Group (AOSH) Legal Update in Bristol on 10 January.

There will be over 200 attendees at the event, including health & safety managers from various industrial sectors, and health & safety consultants and enforcement officers from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities.

Health and safety legislation

Richard’s talk will examine the government’s current ‘red tape blitz to boost business growth’, which aims to identify legislation to be abolished or reduced, with some 3,000 regulations being targeted. The conference will provide an essential update on the independent, government-backed Löfstedt Review of current health & safety legislation. It will also examine the HSE review of all 52 Approved Codes of Practice and the proposal to exempt the self-employed in low-risk occupations from health and safety law.

Richard will also be exploring the nuances of the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill that is currently passing through the House of Lords and he will outline the provisions of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012, which provides that companies cannot recover their costs in defending prosecutions.

Regulatory laws

The corporate landscape is changing dramatically and it is essential that businesses are fully aware and responsive to the changes. Richard has a wealth of experience in all aspects of regulatory work and the Regulatory Corporate Crime team at Lyons Davidson offers a level of understanding and empathy that can be a critical factor in responding effectively to a volatile regulatory environment.

IOSH is the chartered body for health and safety professionals and the world’s biggest professional health and safety membership organisation. It campaigns on issues that affect millions of working people; sets standards and provides resources, training and events like this Legal Update.

AOSH is a local society that exists to promote health, safety, welfare and environment knowledge, understanding and best practice among employers in the Bristol area.
